O'Neil she was in her high-school years during the auditions, auditioned for Canadian Idol's 3rd season during the first months of 2005. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were surprised at her performance and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
